USD 321 SCHOOL NURSE 

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Qualifications: 

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university. 
  2. Current Kansas State Board of Nursing License (Registered Nurse) on file in the District Office.
  3. At least three years experience as a Registered Nurse. 
  4. Health Certificate on file in the District office. 
  5. Well rounded knowledge of health, including mental health.
  6. Ability to work well independently and with others.
  7. Good assessment skills with the ability to act quickly as needed.
  8. BLS/CPR certified.

 

 Essential Functions: 

  1. Help students attain an optimum level of physical, social, and emotional health. 
  2. Establish and maintain a comprehensive health program for students, parents, and employees of the district.
  3. Ensure that all medical activities conform to district guidelines. 
  4. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community. 
  5. Work effectively with community/county/state organizations. 
  6. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  7. Serve as the health consultant and a resource to parents, teachers, and administrators who are providing students with health services during school attendance hours.
  8. Be flexible and organized.

           

 

General Responsibilities: 

  1. Establish and maintain a comprehensive health program for students, parents, and employees of the district. 
  2. Conduct student health appraisals, including:
    1. Medical assessments
    2. Vision screenings 
    3. Documentation and follow-up referrals as needed
    4. Consultation with teachers and parents regarding health concerns
  3. Coordinate a program of communicable disease control based on Kansas immunization laws, to include:
    1. Maintaining immunization records for each student
    2. Communicating with parents regarding immunization requirements
  4. Coordinate a comprehensive program of caring for students who are injured or who become ill at school.
  5. Provide faculty and staff with first-aid and CPR training and supplies.
  6. Assist in providing emergency care for accidents and sudden illness of pupils until parents assume responsibility.
  7. Notify parents and building administrators regarding children who are severely ill or injured. 
  8. Develop Individual Health Care Plans for students with ongoing health care needs.
  9. Medication administration and supervision.
  10. Determination of tasks that may be appropriately delegated to licensed or an unlicensed person on a student by student basis, and provide training, ongoing supervision, and evaluation of delegated staff to assure the safe and effective performance of delegated tasks.
  11. Coordinate and supervise a comprehensive program of health education.
  12. Maintain confidentiality and use good judgment in handling and dispersing information while applying new concepts and details quickly and adapt easily to change.
  13. Confer with parents and community agencies concerning the health of children. 
  14. Assist in planning the health curriculum and instructional materials if needed.
  15. Promotion of health through education and counseling; 4th, 5th, and 6th grade growth and development, and other health education programs as requested by staff.
  16. Counsel with teachers, students, and parents concerning children's individual health problems. 
  17. Maintain a cumulative health folder for each student, recording all data pertinent to the child's health. 
  18. Maintain school health record, document screening results, referral status, immunization record and health assessment to ensure all activities conform to state and district guidelines.
  19. Implements communicable disease control in the school according to county and state guidelines, including monitoring, surveillance and participating in disease prevention and outbreak management within the school.
  20. Coordinates and oversees the district school nursing team.
  21. Submit accurate and timely reports as required by various health agencies. 
  22. Immediately report to the building Principal any safety hazards or unsanitary conditions observed in the school environment. 
  23. Orders and maintains all supplies for the health service program. 
  24. Coordinates bloodborne pathogen training for all staff and keeps records of employee’s hepatitis b immunizations; coordinates with Health Dept. to help staff receive immunizations. 
  25. Adheres to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the  Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan. 
  26. Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
